In January I received an email from my college that I was encouraged to apply for Alpha Lambda Delta a First-Year Honor Society. At first, I thought that it was a scam because I have received an email from places pretending to be honors societies. But I did some research and asked around and it was a legitimate honors society. Members must have a 3.5 GPA or above and be in the top 20% of their class. Originally I shrugged it off and decided that it wasn’t worth paying a one time fee of $50 for a certificate and bragging rights.
But then I started thinking about
Pros
- Scholarship opportunities
- It looks good on resumes and job applications: I can put this on my resume and job applications as proof of my hard work and it is a way for me to stand out amongst others. Since this is a way to show employers how I have obtained high grades without showing them.
- Discounts: They offer a perks program that offers discounts on movie tickets, retail, hotels such as Holiday Inn, amusement park tickets, car rentals and more. The honors society uses Abenity a corporate rewards program to provide discounts.
- Networking: This will provide me a chance to meet new people that are also in Alpha Lambda Delta.
Cons
- There is no guarantee that I will win one of the scholarships that Alpha Lambda Delta offers.
- It cost $50 dollars to join
- If the cost is the only thing stopping you from joining an honors society many colleges including mine offer scholarships and payment plans.
- A lot of people get invited to join first-year honor societies. So I might not stand out that much to employers.
I decided to join Alpha Lambda Delta because the opportunities and savings were worth $50 in the long run since it is a lifetime membership. But it is a personal choice for each person to decide if they are going to join an honors society. What matters is if joining the honors society is going to benefit you.
