February 22 was the last day I purchased clothes before I decided that I wanted to do clothes buying ban. At the time of posting this, I have gone 12 weeks of not buying any clothes. I plan on continuing this until sometime in May then I will reevaluate. The only time that I might have broken the rule was when I bought remnant fabric for .82 before my state-issued the stay at home advisory. But I was not sure if fabric to make an apron counted under my ban. I was feeling overwhelmed by all my clothes that I owned and wanted to do something about it.

What are clothes buying bans and how do I start my own?

Clothes buying ban is when you don’t buy any clothes for an indefinite or set period of time. Some people choose to include buying any accessories as a part of the ban.

If you want to start one yourself you need to decide how long you are going to do clothes buying ban. Along with what exactly are you not allowed to buy and are you going to make any exceptions. I decided that I was not allowed to buy clothes or shoes unless I really needed them.

Why are you doing clothes buying ban?

I was inspired by Mrs. Frugalwoods who runs the blog Frugalwoods. She did her own clothes buying ban that lasted a few years even when she was pregnant. My closet and drawers were full of stuff that I never wore. Yet I kept saying I needed to buy clothes for cosplay or to wear in the future. I wanted to see if clothes buying ban would help me wear more clothes that I already own and to finally clear out what I don’t wear.

Another reason was I was saving because there were a few trips that I wanted to take in the next few years. One trip in 2021 to attend a convention and another in 2023 with friends to celebrate graduating college. I am not sure if they are still going to happen but for right now I am still planning on going. This has given me, even more, motivation to reduce unnecessary spending.

I will update everyone as my clothes buying ban continues sharing what I learned. Meanwhile, if you want to stay in touch I am on Twitter @frugal_genie and Instagram @frugal.genie.
