Here are my recommendations for what you should and shouldn’t buy secondhand. Buying used has a multitude of benefits such as saving money and being sustainable. When you shop secondhand you are reducing your carbon footprint and not sending items to landfills.
I also encourage you to be cautious when buying secondhand items such as electronics or cars. Make sure that you do your research so you don’t get scammed or overcharged. Also if you are buying something from craigslist or facebook marketplace be cautios. Make sure that you meet in a public area when you do buy used items from people. This is something to keep in mind post covid.
A good rule of thumb is if it seems to good to be true it probably is.
But what about people who say buying used things is gross?
When I read or hear about people saying that used items are gross I would say that it isn’t that big of a deal to me. When I buy or obtain used items I make sure that they are in good condition and I make sure to clean them first.
What you should buy secondhand
- Books
If I want a book that I can’t find at the library I try to buy them secondhand before buying a new book.
2. Clothes
Clothes are a great item to buy secondhand because it takes a lot of water and other resources to produce clothing. According to World Wildlife Fund, it takes 2,700 liters to make a single t-shirt.
3. Handbags
I bought a Longchamp Le Pilage Tote bag from ThredUp a few years ago for $52 with a retail value of $145.
4. Electronics
5. Fabric
7. Dvd’s and Cd’s
Check to make sure their are no scratches before you buy them
8. Cars
As soon as you drive off the car dealer’s lot the car depreciates in value. Furthermore, used cars can often mean lower car insurance premiums versus new cars.
9. Toys
10. Home Decor
11. Organizing bins
What not to buy secondhand
Undergarments: Due to hygiene reasons
Bathing suits: The same reason as the above hygiene reasons
Cribs and Car Seats: I don’t recommend buying secondhand due to safety reasons. I would also make to check the manufacturer’s website for any recalls.
Beauty Products and Toiletries
Mattresses
Hats
Shoes
