These are some things that I learned when my college switched to remote learning in March because of the Pandemic. I hope that you find these tips helpful.
First off when taking an online class it’s important to know how the course will be taught. The course should have a description or your professor should be reaching out to you about how the course will work.
synchronous: That means you attend class in real-time.
Asynchronous: This means you learn online with no set times
Blended: This means you learn online with occasional synchronous class meetings which are preset by the professor.
Now let’s dive into my tips for remote learning!
1. Use a planner
Use a paper or online planner to help you stay on top of assignments and other commitments such as work or extracurriculars.
2. Carve out time to study
Make sure you find time in your schedule to study or work on assignments for classes.
3. Read the syllabus
Don’t recycle it or turn it into a paper airplane before you read the syllabus for each of your classes. They have important information such as
- The best way to contact the professor
- Office hours
- Required textbooks
- Grading policy and more
4. Ask Questions
If you have a question don’t be afraid to ask your professor.
5. Find a study buddy or group
Exchange contact information with a classmate(s) in case you both want to study together, ask questions, or for notes if you miss a class. Last year for one of my history classes me and one of my friends organized a small study group that met before any big tests or projects. We would reserve a study room in our school’s library and review what we thought might be on the test. Even though things are different this year you can still find ways to study virtually or social distancing with other people safely.
6. Attend your class
Even though your class might be online you still need to attend and complete your assignments. You do not get to complete your assignments whenever you want because professors still assign deadlines and grades. But if you are having trouble don’t be afraid to reach out to your professor for help. If they don’t respond or you don’t feel comfortable find someone else from your school that you can reach out to.
