Here are some easy and frugal ways that you can sustainably wrap a gift. I organized the ideas by refuse, reduce, reuse, and recycle to show how it’s possible to reduce your waste.
Refuse
Try to avoid buying single use gift wrap that will be thrown in the trash.
Reduce
Try buying sustainable gift wrap or shopping local. You can also avoid unnecessary
Reuse
Use what you have at home or things that can be recycled
- reuse old gift bags
- Glass jars
- Pillowcase
- Bandana or scarf
- Scrap fabric from a sewing project
- A tote bag that you no longer use
Recycle
You can opt for recyclable or reusable gift wrap
- Kraft paper
- newspaper
- reuse cardboard boxes
- Old Maps
But what about tape?
You can use washi tape which is made of natural fibers such as rice or bamboo and it’s recyclable. You can find Washi tape at a craft store or Etsy. Another option is paper packing tape
If you want to add a extra touch
- Write a handwritten note/card
- Tie the gift with twine
- Wrap your gift in kraft paper and stamp the paper using a rubber stamp
- Use old kids artwork/drawings
Their are so many ways that you can wrap a gift creatively while reducing the amount of trash being sent to landfill. Let me know if you have any gift wrapping ideas that I did not mention below.
