Must have dorm room essentials that you will need

Here are some of my college dorm room essentials that I found useful. This may not work for everyone because each college has different policies and setups. I thought this blog post will still be helpful for people going back to college in person. Right now my plan is to live on campus and take a mix of in-person and online classes. Everyone needs to decide what is best for them in regards to if you will be taking in-person or online classes. However, please follow your local health officials guidelines to keep you and everyone else safe.

1. Minifridge

Make sure you coordinate with your roommate(s) about who is bringing the minifridge, microwave, tv, etc. Since dorms are small and you don’t need two of each. My sister gave me her old minifridge because she no longer needs it. Ask around if anyone has a minifridge that they no longer use first before buying a new on because they can get expensive.

2. Microwave

Same as what I mentioned above to coordinate with your roommate(s) about who is bringing the microwave. Along with ask around first before buying a new microwave. I got my microwave for free because I asked to use my grandmother’s that was no longer being used.

3. Laundry basket with wheels

I included this because it made laundry easier for me because I didn’t need to carry it downstairs to do laundry.

4. Luggage (This could also be a duffelbag)

This is helpful for moving in and when you are going home for the weekend or break.

5. surge protector

I use this because my school does not allow extension cords. But it is close to an extension cord lengthwise and helps prevent a power surge. I was able to plug it into an outlet and let them sit on my desk so I can charge several things at a time when needed. It is so useful because the outlets are located in inconvenient places.

6. Cloth face masks

Make sure you bring face masks that follow CDC recommendations if you will be on campus.

7. First aid kit (Link to the first aid kit that I use)

This will save you a trip to a drugstore/pharmacy if you have a cold or headache. I was given a premade first aid kit and I added stuff.

8. Sewing kit

I brought a travel size sewing kit and my box of sewing supplies. This allowed me to fix a button or repair clothes if needed. If you are also a cosplayer a sewing kit is a must-have to repair costumes.

9. Mattress pad/topper

This is one of my favorite things that I don’t regret buying last year. At orientation, I didn’t sleep well because the mattress felt like I was sleeping on a rock. I got my mattress pad on sale at Joanne’s fabrics last year for around 30 dollars.

10. Cleaning supplies

Some of the things that I will be bringing

  • Disinfectant spray and rags
  • Disinfectant wipes
  • Dish soap and sponge
  • Vacuum

Honorable mention is hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol/following CDC guidelines. This will be useful if you aren’t able to wash your hands.
