I did a clothes buying ban: What I learned from not buying clothes for four months

I am still going to be posting information and resources on black lives matter on social media. I am also going to continue to find ways to post more about being an activist and how you can use your voice to make a difference.

If you want to learn about why I did clothes buying ban and my previous update check out my previous blog post. I didn’t buy any clothes or shoes for around four months from February 22 to June 13. I was on my computer looking at costumes and saw that a secret honey seller had discounted beauty and the beast belle’s yellow ballgown. I had been searching for her ballgown for a while looking for the right dress that was nice quality. So that’s what ended my clothes buying ban an impulse buy. When the dress arrives I plan on doing a photoshoot and maybe a blog post about buying from secret honey if people are interested.

I was getting discouraged because I was tired of doing closet cosplays to save money and because of the clothes buying ban. I am not against closet cosplays but I was letting myself be envious of other cosplayers and their costumes. But I learned to think out of the box more when cosplaying. The $3 red thrift store dress inspired me to do a doll cosplay and the black dress I got for free inspired me to do Wednesday Adams. This clothes buying ban also allowed me to draft my tentative cosplans for the rest of the year because I was focusing on what would make me happy instead of pleasing others.

I also saved a lot of money because I stopped and reminded myself that I was doing clothes buying ban whenever I saw an ad for really cute clothes or when I was shopping in-store or online. This is why I allowed myself to buy belle’s ballgown because I followed my own advice to reduce impulse spending. I am not perfect because I still do like to window shop but I did learn to have more self-control about buying clothes. Along with understanding that it is okay to treat yourself or buy yourself something you really want. But it should be intentional and not all the time or it ruins the point of treating yourself.

Overall, I am glad that I did clothes buying ban because I was able to reevaluate my clothes and clean out the clothes that I don’t wear into sell, donate, and upcycle piles. This allowed me to feel less overwhelmed with my clothes.
