Learn how to save time and money with a gift closet
One thing that I will note is that you are not required or obligated to buy gifts for everyone in your life. Yes, it is nice to give and receive gifts but you shouldn’t be especially if you don’t have the money or it will put you in debt. There are other ways that you can celebrate that person without breaking your bank. Now let’s dive into the purpose and function of a gift closet.
What is a gift closet?
A gift closet is a space that is set aside to store gifts year-round for various occasions such as birthdays, holidays, weddings, and more. When you need ideas or need a last-minute gift this is when a gift closet comes in handy.
What are the benefits of a gift closet?
Save Money: You can avoid impulse shopping and are able to shop around to get the best deal on gifts.
Save Time: No more running to the store or paying for rush shipping when you need to purchase a last-minute gift.
Stay Organized: I stay organized by storing gifts that I purchase for people in my gift closet. This helps me especially around the holidays because I try to buy my gifts throughout the year.
How do I create and use a gift closet?
- Designate a closet, draw, bin, or some type of space to store the gifts
- I keep a running list of people that I plan on buying gifts for in a list on my phone. I also make note of their interests and things they mentioned they might appreciate as a gift.
- When I am shopping and I see a good deal or something that I know someone will enjoy I buy it and store it in my gift closet. One example is when I found sandwich size stasher bags at Home Goods for $9 instead of i’s usual price of $11.99. I got them because stasher bags are a sustainable company that doesn’t generally have sales.
- I only buy stuff for the gift closet if I have a specific person in mind and I know that I will use it. I do occasionally keep a few generic gifts. But I try to limit that because I want gifts to thoughtful and show that I know the person. It is also more sustainable because I am not simply buying gifts so I can have them in my gift stash. Instead, I am being intentional about what I buy and make sure that it has a purpose.
- When it is time for me to choose a gift I check the gift closet first before shopping.
